Installation tips

Bubbles

It’s common to have small bubbles after installation using the wet method.  However, water under the surface will slowly dry out, and the bubbles will eventually go away leaving a clean finish.  This is the reason why we highly recommend using the wet method for large and/or difficult installations.

Here’s an example of a typical surface right after installation:

dscf0625.jpg

Here’s the same surface after several weeks, where most bubbles have dried out:

Winkled edges

It’s common to have wrinled edges, since you’re applying a flat vinyl on a curved surface.  However, it can be solved by introducing heat slowly to allow the film to shrink and curve to the surface.   If there’s a big wrinkle, separate them into smaller and easier to work parts.  Remember not to rush it, too much heat or too much force applied to the surface of the film will leave undesireable results.

Tools

Some of the tools you may need to make the installation process easier:

  • Solution (water and a few drops of dish-washing liquid)- to help with alignment and prevent the vinyl from sticking to the surface before intended.
  • Spray bottle - to distribute the solution.
  • Plastic squeegee - to press out air bubbles.
  • Hair dryer - to shrink and conform the vinyl.
  • Scissors - to cut off excess vinyl.
  • Safety pin - to use in removing air bubbles.
  • X-acto knife - to trim the excess vinyl.

Rim tapes

Before you begin, make sure the surface is clean and free of dust and other debris.

dscf0638.jpg

To start, you will need one end of the pre-curved tape to fully stay in place on the rim.

dscf0639.jpg

You can then use your thumb to align and rub the outter edges of the tape to stick to the rim.

dscf0642.jpg

With only the outter edges of the tape stuck to the rim, you can visually double check the alignment and make changes if needed.

dscf0640.jpg

If everything is correct, you can gently run your fingers over the tape to stick it to the rim.

dscf0644.jpg

Towards the end, if you have excess tape, you can cut it off and let it overlap a little.

The end result.

Lense cover

Tools you may need:

ScratchOn pre-cut lens cover
Solution (water and a few drops of dishwashing liquid)
Spray bottle
Plastic squeegee
Hair dryer

dscf0592.jpg

Peel the lens cover from its backing and spray the solution onto the sticky side of the lens cover.

dscf0595.jpg

Spray the surface of the headlights with the solution.

dscf0596.jpg

Align the lens cover with the top portion of the lights.

dscf0598.jpg

Use the squeegee or your fingers to GENTLY push out the water underneath the top straight edges.

dscf0605.jpg

dscf0606.jpg

Then use a hair dryer, under low heat, to go over the top edges.  This will slowly shrink the lens cover, dry out the water, and help the top edges stick so you can work on the other parts.

dscf0607.jpg

Once the top edges are properly aligned, you can then work on the side edges by putting one finger on the bottom corner while running a hair dryer GENTLY on low heat over the lens cover.  This will slowly shrink the film down and conform it over the curves of the headlight housing.

dscf0617.jpg

Continue to run a combination of low heat and gentle force from either your fingers or a squeegee to conform the lens cover. Too much heat or too much force will shrink and stretch the lens cover too quickly, which will cause deformities and undesirable results.

dscf0615.jpg

dscf0616.jpg

dscf0617.jpg

If the surface dries out before you’re done, you can always spray more solution underneath.

dscf0618.jpg

Small bubbles at the edges can be eliminated by running a hair dryer on low heat and running your fingers gently over it.  This will slowly shrink the film and conform it to the curves.  Remember to use gentle force and low heat.  Too much heat will cause the cover to shrink too quickly, and too much force can cause the cover to wrinkle and stretch.

dscf0609.jpg

dscf0610.jpg

dscf0612.jpg

The problematic areas at the bottom can be eliminated by shrinking the film slowly, running the hair dryer on low heat and gently pressing some force from your fingers or squeegee.

dscf0619.jpg

The end result, after a few weeks when most water bubbles have cleared.

done.jpg

Note:  Small bubbles and light haze are common using the wet method.  They will eventually dry out and disappear.  Big bubbles can be eliminated by using a needle to poke a small hole, and then push out the solution.  Below is a typical bubbles that you may see immediately after installation, but will eventually dry up and clear out after a few weeks.  For more tips, please see  http://www.scratchon.com/instructions/installation-tips/.

    FAQ

How long will the film last?
For clear film, it’s rated for maximum 8 years outdoor life by the manufacturer. For colored film, it’s rated for 5 years outdoor life.

Is it best to install the kit using wet or dry method?
Based on our past experiences, we’ve found that the wet method offers the best result. If done right, bubbles and misalignment is unlikely using the wet installation method. However, dry method is often used when installing smaller pieces, i.e. fog lamps.

The head lights seem to be foggy after the protection kit is installed, is this normal?
If this was done using the wet installation method, then it is normal. The fog is caused by moisture evaporating underneath the film. The fog appearance will last for several days, but will eventually clear out.

Will the adhesive damage my paint?
If the paint has been properly cured, clear coated, and free from surface damages, the adhesive will not damage the surface. For best results, always use a heat gun to soften up the glue before removing the vinyl.

The film is removed, but some adhesive is left on the surface. How do I remove it?
The adhesive can be removed using rubbing alcohol or Goo Gone.

Is the film easily bent to fit the contours of my car?
We have found that 3mm thickness is the best compromise between flexibility and protection. The film can be easily contoured onto most surfaces.

The film is not sticking to some areas, what should I do?
Before applying the film on to any surface, make sure you clean the area thoroughly and that it is free of dust and other debris. If the surface has been waxed recently, then the film may not stick until the wax is removed. Also, the film will stick very well if the surface is slightly above room temperature.

What’s the waiting period, after painting, before I can apply the clear paint protection film?
Check with your paint shop for their recommendation. The waiting period varies depending on the type of paint and how it was cured. Keep in mind that if the paint has been properly cured and clear coated, then the adhesive will not damage the surface.

Are the colored films street legal?
Colored films are for off-road competition uses only. They are not street legal. However, check your local law enforcement to which colors are not legal to have.

What’s the advantage of having a colored film over replacing the bulbs with colored bulbs?
Replacing the bulbs still doesn’t protect your head light lenses from scratches and damages from small debris.

Do you have instructions on how to install your products?
